10 (More) Must-See Summer Movies

By Victoria Robertson on May 15, 2017

As previously stated, summer movies are moving in on us rather quickly, and there are far too many to count. There are literally enough to keep you busy all summer long. But, in the interest of highlighting the most interesting, I’ve shortened that list quite a bit.

That being said, I tried to accommodate everyone’s tastes, but that’s unlikely. So check out other sites for some of your favorites!

Without further ado, here are the top 10 summer movies (for the second half of summer) that you’re going to want to check out!

1. “Rough Night”

The very dark comedy is reminiscent of “The Hangover,” with an all-star cast and a bachelorette party gone very, very wrong. Still, “Rough Night” takes the cake in terms of darkness, as the female characters kill a male stripper (on accident).

The film, starring Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell, Ilana Glazer, and Zoe Kravitz, will certainly bring the laughs, but be prepared for that darker end as well.

2. “Transformers: The Last Knight”

A continuation story of the Mark Wahlberg film that won’t quit, the new “Transformers” yet again brings the beloved characters to life in what’s undoubtedly an explosion-filled sequel.

While the series probably should have ended a long time ago (at the very least, after the loss of Shia LaBeouf), this is still a must-see for any “Transformers” fans.

3. “Amityville: The Awakening”

As a personal lover of the horror industry, this isn’t the most exciting scary movie on the radar this summer. Perhaps it’s the casting of Bella Thorne, perhaps it’s the fact that it’s been done so many times before.

Whatever the reason, it doesn’t matter, because “Amityville” is back. The continuation story of sorts hits theaters this summer, and who knows? Maybe it’ll surprise and terrify us this time around too.

4. “Despicable Me 3”

The cutesy animated feature will truly never get old, and it’s going to prove it this summer with a third installment. Steve Carrell is back to voice Gru for a third time, this time with Gru’s (spoiler alert) wife (Kristen Wiig).

Oh, and the three adorable girls are back as well as a new, brotherly character. And, of course, the minions. Enough said.

5. “The House”

Amy Poehler and Will Ferrell have teamed up for a comedy that too many people will be able to relate to, no matter their situation in life. The two, playing a married couple, will do whatever it takes to pay for their children’s college tuition, including turning their home into a casino.

And you better believe that with both comedy legend’s involvement, the laughs aren’t going to be far behind.

6. “Spiderman: Homecoming”

Yes, “Spiderman” has been done a million times. No, that doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be done anymore. Or maybe it does, but Marvel doesn’t care.

Starring Tom Holland, whom you’ll recognize from “Civil War” in which he debuted as Spiderman, the film is certainly more high school, taking everything back to the beginning once again. And with the fresh new face and matching perspective, it’s bound to be a hit.

7. “War for the Planet of the Apes”

Another franchise that’s been around forever, the “Planet of the Apes” isn’t quite done yet. With yet another installment, this time starring Woody Harrelson, it’s a must-see, unless you haven’t seen the others. In which case, you should watch those first. You’re welcome.

8. “Wish Upon”

From the creators of “Annabelle” (already sold), “Wish Upon” follows another haunted object, this time a music box. Quicker than you can say “possessed,” weird things begin happening in the lives of its owners, with catastrophic consequences.

9. “Dunkirk”

Based on true events, “Dunkirk” is a retelling of the battle between allied forces and the German army during World War II. So yes, this is another war movie, but at the same time, this is one like you haven’t seen before.

Expect violence, emotion, and plenty of drama to go around.

10. “Annabelle: Creation”

Easily one of the most anticipated horror films of the summer, the “Annabelle” prequel, which makes this a prequel in a prequel, will hopefully live up to its name. We know the haunted doll story in part, but we haven’t seen it played out on the big screen from the beginning.

So, the creators have fixed that little tidbit for us and have now graced us with yet another scary movie to keep us awake well into the night.

Again, there are plenty more films out there for your viewing pleasure, but these are just a few to build up the anticipation. No matter what film you choose this summer, you really can’t go wrong, and that’s an exciting idea for everyone.

So happy viewing everyone! And be sure to see them all!
